After getting tired of visiting all those pages on Digg, Reddit,Delicious, Mixx,TweetMeme… until I could finally visit the original link of an interesting story, that took ages and precious time. So I have worked on a script that would do the unpleasant process described above for you, and provide you only the top links that you are really interesting in. This script is available as an iGoogle Gadget and as a Facebook application. Top stories are updated every 15 minutes, so don’t worry about missing an interesting link on the original source. Currently the script fetches stories from Digg, Mixx, TweetMeme, Delicious, Reddit, Propeller, but adding more is not a problem (if you would like to include a source in a future version of this script, let me know in a comment to this post).

2.8.6 fixes two security problems that can be exploited by registered, logged in users who have posting privileges. If you have untrusted authors on your blog, upgrading to 2.8.6 is recommended.

The first problem is an XSS vulnerability in Press This discovered by Benjamin Flesch. The second problem, discovered by Dawid Golunski, is an issue with sanitizing uploaded file names that can be exploited in certain Apache configurations. Thanks to Benjamin and Dawid for finding and reporting these.

OMG: Sony Playstation 3 smahed into a Bravia TV

“OMG, dude, they’ve smashed a PlayStation 3 into a Bravia TV!” “OMG, that was cool!”, and so the video spreads at viral speeds. This is the marketing technique that Sony Australia makes use of, trying to promote their new Bravia TV set. Tested on a car-smashing zone, the PS 3 was launched at 80 km/hr (22 meters/hr) into a brand new Bravia TV. Weighing only 3.2KG, the impact of the two devices resulted in a force of 7744Newtons (790KG) by PS3 on the Bravia TV.

Just wondering, why didn’t they save the PS3 from falling down off the TV set? I am sure it would still have been functional

Warning: You might be at risk! Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 plugin for Firefox is the cause

Last February, Microsoft released an update for the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 via Windows Update. It turns out that along with the update, a plugin was automatically installed in the Firefox browser. Moreover the plugin was practically impossible to uninstall or delete through Firefox Add-ons manager. A method to escape the threat was a real headache and a dangerous operation, as it implied to manually look in the registry and delete the harmful keys.

What is this threat about? According to some sources, the current threat enables any website to quietly install malware software on the victim’s PC. There is still no fix for this threat, but if you have installed a good antivirus/anti-malware/anti-spyware software, you might be protected.

One minute ago I have posted a message on my wall, refreshed the page and whoa! the first messages to appear are from Thursday. I am not sure what happened to Facebook (might it be another attack, or just maintenance work), but there’s surely something happening out there. Update: It seems that new statuses do not get saved. Also the activity bar from the bottom of the page, displays incorrectly.

I’ve just noticed a strange issue on Mashable.com . If I go page by page, starting with page nr 1 till page nr 5, when I hover my mouse on the other page links, some strange text is appended to the url. I don’t think my machine has been hacked or virused, as I work on a Ubuntu Linux OS with latest security patches. The additional text is: http://freewebtown.com/fucku/fx29id.txt?? . I’ve checked that page, but it doesn’t exist (redirected to another website). Freewebtown is a hosting company, whereas fucku seems to be a member of Freewebtown. Here’s a photo with it:

PS: This happened only on a Firefox 3.5.3 . I’ve checked the website with Opera 10 and the issue disappeared.
